The recently launched Secular Services Directory was created to make it easier for humanists, atheists, skeptics, and so on to find providers of important, sometimes sensitive services – medical, mental health, legal, educational, etc. – who won’t use their work as a platform for their religion, or judge their clients on religious grounds. Professionals in such fields that don’t understand or respect Secular viewpoints can do harm. Members of our community need and deserve respectful, understanding services.
Secularism is growing, but services geared toward the needs of secular people lags behind. It’s easy to find explicitly faith-based businesses, because this attribute is often advertised, even when not relevant to the goods or services being offered. There’s been no comprehensive resource to meet this need, until now.
Most of us have had the experience of being proselytized to, or having our worldview/philosophy subtly marginalized. The directory team wants to make a difference and provide a place to find the support you need without the added burden of having to put up with this discrimination.
Anyone can freely search the directory for services from providers they can rely on to operate on a secular, science-based approach. Whether someone wants a doctor who knows that bacteria evolve, a psychotherapist who won’t judge life choices or think the lack of religion is a problem, a daycare center that won’t indoctrinate their kids, or funeral officiants who don’t assure mourners that the deceased is in a better place, they’ll be able to find it in this directory.
Of course, we’re also serious about privacy. We’re dedicated to maintaining privacy for all users of the directory, particularly service providers who may face discrimination by being “out” in their area. We let members screen potential clients anonymously through a web contact form, and businesses concerned about local backlash may list anonymously.
During this initial phase, we’re busy connecting with organizations and people that serve the secular so we can build a strong directory with listings in every part of the country. So take a look around and send us any suggestions or questions. We hope you’ll agree the website meets an important need of the secular community.
Even more importantly, if you believe in our mission, help support us by creating a listing if appropriate, encouraging others to create listings, and telling others about us.
It’s time the secular community had such a resource and support; please help us grow and help people.
